Every Body is a Yoga Body: Embracing Yoga as a Curvy Woman

Let’s get one thing straight: yoga is for everyone

The idea that yoga is only for the young, thin, or ultra-flexible is a myth that needs to be busted once and for all. If you’ve ever felt like yoga isn’t for you because of your size or shape, it’s time to rethink that.

Yoga is about connection, not contortion. It’s a practice that meets you where you are—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and evolves with you over time.

So, whether you’re curvy, plus-size, or anywhere in between, know this: your body is a yoga body.

Choosing the Right Class

Embracing your body and celebrating what it can do is at the heart of yoga. It’s not about how you look in a pose; it’s about how you feel. And trust me, the feeling of empowerment that comes from moving your body in a way that feels good is unparalleled. I’ve had the privilege of working with countless women who once believed they didn’t “fit the mold” for yoga, only to find themselves falling in love with the practice.

Yoga isn’t about forcing your body into shapes; it’s about finding the shape that works for your body. Modifications are your best friend, and there’s no shame in using props to support your practice. Blocks, straps, bolsters, and even chairs can make poses more accessible, allowing you to experience the benefits without discomfort or strain.

For example, if you find it challenging to reach the floor in a forward bend, use blocks under your hands to bring the floor closer to you. If balancing poses feel unstable, practice near a wall for extra support. The key is to listen to your body and adjust the practice to fit you, not the other way around.

And let’s talk about working with an instructor who understands the unique needs of plus-size women. A supportive instructor will encourage you to honor your body’s limits and celebrate its strengths, offering modifications and adjustments that make the practice accessible and enjoyable.

Finding the right class is crucial to your yoga journey. Look for instructors who emphasize body positivity and inclusivity. These are the teachers who will welcome you with open arms and help you feel confident on the mat. Don’t be afraid to ask questions before joining a class—find out if the instructor has experience working with plus-size students and if they offer modifications.

In addition to the instructor, the community you practice with matters too. Yoga should be a judgment-free zone, where you feel supported by those around you. Whether you’re in a studio or practicing online, choose a space where you feel comfortable and accepted. Remember, the right class is one where you leave feeling better about yourself than when you arrived.

Yoga is a journey of self-love, acceptance, and growth. It’s a practice that honors where you are today and supports where you’re headed tomorrow. No matter your size, shape, or experience level, yoga is for you. Don’t let misconceptions or fear hold you back—step onto your mat with confidence, knowing that it’s a space for you to connect with your body and mind.
